We are doing a fundraising campaign with Kids Card Designs. Your child has produced a fantastic piece of art, which will be sent home for you to see along with an order form. These will be sent home at the beginning of Week 3, on either Monday the 27th or Wednesday the 29th for Kindy students.

The artwork can be turned into a whole range of useful products including - iPhone cases, iPad, iPod and iPad Mini cases, a fabulous ready made Recipe book with your child's art or a family photo on the front cover of Greeting Cards, Calendars, write on/wipe off Magnetic fridge planners, handy sized Diaries and for you to order.

These fundraising products are unique, as they will feature artwork designed by your child or a family photo, and will provide a lasting memento for you to give as a gift or keep for yourselves.

Artwork and order forms will go home together. Please return all orders, payments and artwork by the date outlined on the order form.

To place an order, please see the following:

  1. Please return the order form, art and payment together to your child's classroom.
  2. Please DO NOT fold or staple the artwork as this damages the artwork, which can affect final images.
  3. For families, please return all siblings artwork, orders and payments compiled together (please not stapled), handed in by one child.

HEAD LICE

A few cases of head lice have been reported throughout the school. It would be appreciated if you could check your child's hair carefully for head lice and / or eggs. For more information and treatment options, please visit the website.

BACKPACKS

Carrying a backpack can injure your child's back if care is not taken. Here are some helpful tips for protecting young backs:

  • Make sure that your child's backpack does not weigh more than 10% of his/her bodyweight.
  • Choose a backpack with broad shoulder straps that are well padded and adjustable so it sits comfortably on the shoulders. I should have waist and chest straps to keep the load in place and help evenly transfer the load to the hips and pelvis.
  • Encourage your child to wear both straps at all times to distribute the weight.
  • Choose a padded back-support that allows the pack to fit 'snugly' on the back.
  • Adjust the straps so that the backpack fits close against the child's back.
  • Choose a backpack, which fits the child. The size should be in proportion to his/her body.
  • Pack the heaviest items closest to the body and the lighter items further out.
  • Make sure that your child is carrying only what she/he really needs to carry.
  • Take notice of how your child is carrying the backpack - if your child is leaning forward to carry the backpack, tighten the straps or lighten the load.
  • When packed, ensure the backpack doesn't sag or pull backwards.
  • Clip on the waist straps to keep the load in place when walking or cycling.
  • Do not carry the backpack for long amounts of time, take regular breaks.

SCOLIOSIS

Scoliosis is an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine. It can be detected by a simple examination of the back.

The normal spine has three curves - one in the neck, on in the upper back and one in the lower back. These curves can be seen from the side, but when you look from behind the spine should appear straight. If the spine has a sideways curve, this is scoliosis.

An information leaflet about Scoliosis will be distributed to all year 6 and 7 students. Please read through the information provided and check your child for scoliosis as described in the leaflet.

If you have any concerns, please contact your General Practitioner or Community Health Nurse, Fiona on 93135418.

VISION AND EYES

Good vision is important for learning and quality of life. Watch for any of the following in your child:

  • Covering/closing one eye when reading;
  • Holding books very close;
  • Complaining of eyestrain or headache;
  • Complaining of double vision or blurred vision with reading or board viewing;
  • Complaining of words moving on a page;
  • Losing place when reading, or skipping words and lines;
  • Inattention or short attention span when reading, or;
  • Rubbing the eyes.

Please note: Medicare covers the cost of an eye examination.

If you have a concern about your child's vision, please contact a doctor, optometrist or your local Community Health Nurse, Fiona on 93135418.

COLOUR BLINDNESS

Colour blindness means that a person cannot distinguish some colours or see the colours differently to other people. Very few people who are colour blind are 'blind' to all colours. Commonly, the colours seen differently are greens, yellows, oranges and reds.

An information leaflet on colour blindness will be distributed to all year 6 students in term four. Please take the time to read the pamphlet.

For more information and see the Colour Blind Awareness and Support Group here.

If you have any concerns, some general practitioners, eye specialists or optometrists can perform colour vision testing. You can also contact your local Community Health Nurse, Fiona on 93135418.
