Dear Parents

Staffing Appointment

The process for the appointment of the school's new Administration Officer has now been completed with the appointment of Mrs Deborah (Deb) Goodwin to the position. Deb is currently employed part-time in similar roles at both the Leeming and South Fremantle senior high schools. Previously Deb also worked at Corpus Christi College, Bateman in Student Services for a number of years. I am sure you will join me in welcoming Deb to the Orana School community. Deb will officially start work here on Monday 6 October 2014.

Staff Movement

Miss Denise Mouttet is working as Administration Officer from this point in time through until the end of the current term. Mrs Santa Ruffo has taken over Denise's role as Education Assistant (Support for middle and upper primary); Miss Mikali Fee has picked up some of Santa's previous role for the same time period.

We welcome back from long service leave Mrs Helen Morcombe this week and next week Mrs Lyn Perrigo from her long service leave. Thank you to both Mrs Cherise MacDonald and Miss Meagan Baronas for their work here covering these positions in the school.

Free Dress Day (follow-up)

Thank you for the way the students embraced the heroes free dress day last Thursday, especially the collection of heroes at the farewell assembly. The money raised from the day, as part of being able to wear free dress, is to be donated to the Children's Starlight Foundation, the charity of Mrs Brown's choosing. Thank you once again for your generosity.

Performing Arts Festival

Well done again this last week to our individual and group performers. Starting last Friday the Year 1 students received rave reviews (note use of plural for review) with their singing, as did both the Junior and Senior Choirs on the same day. On Monday of this week, Year 6 students participated in the Choral Speech section of the Performing Arts Festival. Again this entry for the school was very well received and appreciated. Individuals who received acknowledgement from the Festival's organizers this week include:

Honourable Mention for Orana's School Concert Band;

Honourable Mention for Orana's Senior Choir in the Primary Choral Singing; and

Certificate of Merit for Orana's Junior Choir (Beginning Choir) in the Primary Choral Singing.

Cross Country Carnival

Thank you to all who took part in the school's cross-country carnival yesterday. Congratulations to our winners of each race (teams of 4 runners will now go into the interschool cross-country carnival on Tuesday 9 September). A special mention is made to those students who persevered and completed their races even when things were difficult for them - a good test of your character and resilience. Most impressed with the encouragement and support shown by the children toward each other. Thank you to the parents who attended, especially those who assisted on the day and to Miss Kate Mavric for her work before and on the day. The medallions will be presented at assembly this Friday along with a special presentation to Mrs Loretta Wesley (Matthew 6W) who has coached cross-country runners here at Orana for at least the last 8 years that I am aware of.

Duty of Care (1) Afterschool Play (Kindergarten and Pre-primary)

There are a number of families who must wait around the school for older siblings of K and PP children to be released from their classes. Earlier this year, following several parental requests to allow younger children access to playground facilities in this period of time, this was supported provided parents of these children were active in supervising their own children's play. Following several reports made to the class teachers and to Administration, it is evident that some are not adhering to this. I remind parents of the requirement for constant supervision and that, under the school's duty of care, as Principal I reserve the right to rescind the agreement in place.

Duty of Care (2) Before School

Teacher supervision is provided before school from 8.30am. Prior to this time children at school are here at Before School care or involved in organized sports activities (netball, basketball, cross-country). On the rare occasions should your child be at school before the duty teacher is present and not at one of the above, they must be in the undercover area seated quietly and certainly not involved in any play activities. Thank you.

Fathers' Day Breakfast

Next Thursday for all dads, granddads and uncles. You are all most welcome. Please see the P&F notice associated with this.

Pupil Free Days

Two pupil free days are coming up. The first is Friday 5 September and the second Monday 8 September. Staff are attending a faith formation PD on the Friday followed by Boys in Education PD on the Monday. OSHC is operational on both days.

This Friday there is a whole school assembly with honour certificates for middle and upper primary students. All are most welcome.
