Dear Parents

Feast of the Assumption

There is to be a School Mass conducted this Friday here in the hall commencing at 11.00am. Celebrated every year on August 15, the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary commemorates the death of Mary and her bodily assumption into Heaven, a foretaste of our own bodily resurrection at the end of time. Because it signifies the Blessed Virgin's passing into eternal life, it is the most important of all Marian Feasts and a Holy Day of Obligation.

Congratulations (x4)

Congratulations are extended to the following students:

  • Keoni and Lani Upton who were welcomed into the Catholic community last weekend when they both received the Sacrament of Baptism.
  • Brodie Wren who is the recipient of a 2015 sporting scholarship to John Curtin Senior High School as part of their elite soccer players program.
  • Daniel Spence who has just returned from Adelaide where he participated in the National Ice-Hockey Carnival. Daniel, at 11 years of age, was the youngest team member of the WA 13 Year Old and Under team.
  • The 11 members of the primary school guitar ensemble invited to attend a second playing of their Performing Arts Festival item, this time in the playoff for one of the festival's shields.

League Tag Carnival

Congratulations to our senior students who represented the school at the interschool League Tag Carnival yesterday. League tag is very similar to 'touch rugby' with students having to 'steal' one of two tags attached by Velcro to the waist of opposing players. Like touch rugby there are limits to the number of tags stolen before a turnover occurs. Tries are awarded in the game.

Cross Country

Please see note and plan for the 2014 Years 3-6 Cross Country Carnival.

Performing Arts Festival

We acknowledge and congratulate the following for their efforts and achievements as part of the 25th Annual Catholic Performing Arts Festival during the last week:

For receiving an Honourable Mention:

Primary Vocal Solos - Alannah Bird, Nikita Cottier, Shakira Goltman and Montanna Miller.
Instrumental Solos - Katherine Xavier, Isabella Foster, Matthew McLoughney, Sinead Regan, Elly Kember, Zach Pivac.

Congratulations also to the following for receiving a Certificate of Merit:

Instrumental Solos - Yohann Gomes, Antonella Jiggins, Carina Colgan
Primary Vocal Solo - Abigail Carlos, Chloe Adam.

Such an amazing result!

School Transport

The school is seeking the assistance of a parent willing and able to help with the transporting of one of our Orana students before and after school to the child's home for five days per week. This is anticipated to be for a short period of time only until more sustainable and permanent measures are put in place. The child resides in the Thornlie area. If you are able to be of assistance, please make contact with Mrs Leonie Brown in the Front Office.

Children Not Well

Please err on the side of caution when deciding to send your child to school if you believe they are unwell. While illness can strike quickly, it is apparent that some children are arriving at school clearly unwell. We have, within a number of classes, a growing list of children absent due to different illnesses and ailments. To minimize the number of children becoming infected by others, please ensure your child, if sent to school, is fit enough for the day's work.

Special Assembly

A reminder that there is to be a whole school assembly to acknowledge the work of Mrs Leonie Brown held next Thursday 21 August commencing at 9.00am. This will be followed by morning tea for parents to also have an opportunity to thank Leonie for her many years of service to this school community. Thursday 21 August is a free dress day, come dressed as your "hero" for the day, the gold coin donation to be given to the charity of Mrs Brown's choosing.

The assembly on that day will take the place of the Friday whole school assembly; as such honour certificates will be distributed at that assembly. Kindergarten children are invited to fully participate in the day's activities.

This week's assembly is on again at the usual 8.50am start with honour certificates for students in the middle and upper grades. All parents are most welcome to attend.
