Dear Parents

Lenten Season

A big part of the Lenten season is us being asked to support those in greater need through the Project Compassion appeal. This year Project Compassion focuses on the ways to empower communities to establish sustainable food sources and develop income streams for life. The Caritas website is a very good one for further information about where funds raised through Project Compassion are directed. http://www.caritas.org.au/projectcompassion

School Parking

Each family will today receive hardcopies of the Orana Catholic Primary School "Carpark Safety and Traffic Guide", a simple yet reasonably comprehensive guide to parking in and around the school. I encourage you all to become familiar with the request and the directions given on the information sheet so as to ensure as best as is possible the safety of our students in and around the school.

Pupil Free Days

The school will be closed for two days, on Monday 2 March for Labour Day holiday and on Tuesday 3 March so staff can attend a whole day professional development course looking into the teaching of writing in schools.

The history of Labour Day in Australia spans over a century. It is an important annual event that remembers those who struggled and succeeded to ensure decent and fair working conditions in Australia. During the mid to late 1800s the working day was long and arduous, where some employees would work up to 12 hours a day, six days a week. Many Australians saw the need for better working conditions and in the 1850s there was a strong push for this. On April 21, 1856, stonemasons at the University of Melbourne marched to Parliament House to push for an eight-hour working day. An agreement with employers for a 48-hour week was eventually reached and Australian workers welcomed the new eight-hour day.

As we come to the conclusion of these for Years 4-6 students I again take the opportunity to thank the staff, the students and the parents for the extra work involved with ensuring the success of these lessons.

Assembly

No whole school assembly this Friday. With our senior students absent for swimming lessons it has been decided there will be no assembly for this week.
