Dear Parents,

Welcome to Orana Primary School for the 2015 school year, whether you be a family continuing their association with the school or, in the case of a number of families, you are new to Orana as of 2015.

I wish all a very productive and successful school year.

The beginning of each school year is usually full of information and direction of procedures within the school.

Thank you

I would like to thank the numerous people who responded to the request for transport assistance for one new student in the school. A roster of willing parents able to assist has been set in place ensuring that this student is able to receive the Catholic education she and her family were seeking. Thank you.

These will be distributed electronically each and every Wednesday. If you are not already doing so, an efficient way of receiving school news is to receive an electronic copy to your home computer or your mobile device. Subscription is easy by way of the school webpage and following the Subscribe prompt there. This is also a great way for extended family wherever they might be to keep in contact with events around the school. We are also on FaceBook. Like us here.

New staff

We welcome some new staff members to school this year. Mr Nik Hofmeester joins the school as Assistant Principal and as Science specialist. Nik's most recent employment was as AP at St Vincent's School in Parmelia. Mr Leigh Chatt is our Physical Education teacher for 2015 having most recently held a similar position at St Michael's School in Bassendean. We also welcome Mrs Joanne Godsall, Ms Melissa Raphael and Miss Ann-Marie Liston on to the staff as additional Education Assistants within the school. Mrs Di McKay returns into Year 6 following a period of long service leave in Term Four, 2014.

New students

We have had numerous new enrolments into the Kindergarten class for this year along with 16 new students from PP through to Year 6. A warm welcome is extended to these students and to their families. May the association you all have here at Orana be a positive and rewarding one.

2015 Professional Development Days

The following days will be student pupil free days for students here at Orana Catholic Primary School during 2015:

Tuesday 3 March - Learning Area - English (Writing) PD

Tuesday 2 June - Personal Faith Development.

Monday 20 July - Learning Area - Geography PD

Tuesday 21 July - Religious Education PD

Monday 12 October - 2016 annual school improvement planning.

The number of days taken for professional development is in line with Catholic Education guidelines. Where practical, the school has endeavoured to link pupil free days in with that of neighbouring Catholic primary and/or secondary schools.

On each of the days above the Orana Out of School Hours Centre will operate, with one exception, Tuesday 2 June 2015, the OSHC Centre will NOT be open.

Term Dates 2015

The actual days of operation for student attendance in 2015 are shown here.

Morning Tea

Following the whole school assembly on Friday morning 20 February (Week 3), an open invitation is extended to all parents to attend a morning tea in the school hall. With the start of the new school year, we are presented with the opportunity for new and existing parents to come together informally and to share their time with other Orana parents. It would be great to see many parents who are able to attend to make the time to do so. Existing parents (those here prior to this year) intending to attend are asked to bring a shared plate with them. This invitation is extended to all parents in the school from PK through to Year 6.

Swimming Lessons

Swimming lessons begin in Week 3 of the term for children from Year 4 to Year 6. They will be conducted daily at the Riverton Leisure Centre commencing on Monday 16 February through to Friday 27 February inclusive, except on Wednesday 18 February, Ash Wednesday, when it is not possible to meet our obligations as a Catholic school as well as attending swimming lessons on this day. With the cooperation of the Riverton Leisure Centre instructors and staff, this year's 10 lessons will be held over 9 days. Staff at the Centre have assured us that the same content is able to be completed in this time. Swimming lessons are almost a necessity for children here in WA given our climate, our proximity to the ocean and because of the many backyard swimming pools in existence. There may well be changes to the uniform requirements for your child, this information to be forthcoming from the class teachers.

Parent Information Sessions

Information sessions for Years 3-6 are to be held on the evening of Monday 16 February (6.00pm -7.00 pm). Thank you to the staff who conducted their information sessions prior to the commencement of school and to the parents for attending.

P&F Meeting

In 2015 our P&F meetings will again be held in weeks 3 and 7 of each school term, the first meeting therefore will be conducted on the evening of Wednesday 18 February in the school library. Primarily the P&F serves two very valuable roles within the school community - to build and foster a strong sense of community amongst families here and, to raise funds for allocation directly for use and benefit of children within the school. P&F meetings are open for all to attend.

School Band

Practice for the school band has started. Instrumental lessons have mostly started this week also. Bass Guitar and Voice will start in Week 2 and Percussion in Week 4. Choir practice begins in Week 2 of term; senior choir 8.15am on Monday and junior choir the same time on Tuesday of each week.

Acceptable Use Policy

Your child will receive a form next Monday 9 February requesting that they adhere to the school's Acceptable Use Policy in terms of what is appropriate practice and behaviour when using information communication devices and exposure to Internet within the school. This is a very important document we take seriously in the school. It is asked that you, as parents take to time to ensure that your child is aware of their role and their responsibilities in this matter.

Photos for public display

Should you not wish your child's photo, image or name to appear in any of the public forums within the school (website, newsletter, FaceBook etc), please indicate on this form or write directly to the office. This notice will be run for the next two weeks and the request reiterated at information sessions. The onus rests with those families not wanting their child's image to be displayed to inform the school as a matter of priority.

Assembly will take place this Friday in the school hall. This week, students in Year 6B will also lead the school in a prayer service immediately prior to the assembly. These begin at the start of the day, usually around 8.50am.

Assembly in Week 2

Week 2 Assembly is a special assembly for the introduction of our Year 6 students as school leaders and for them to receive their Leadership badges. This assembly is to be followed by morning tea for the Year 6 students and their families. The assembly will start at the special time of 10.10 on this day.
