Dear Parents

As this newsletter goes public we are in the midst of parent/teacher interviews for children from Year 1 through to Year 6. I wish to thank the teachers and parents (and in some cases interviews with students present) for making the effort to put time aside to attend to this important part of the children's education.

Apple Distinguished School

I am delighted to announce that our school has once again been named an Apple Distinguished School for 2013 - 2015. This is a significant "marker" in our progress to bring innovation to the teaching and learning experiences in our school. We are one of 45 schools in Australia that are recognised for creating and sustaining innovative, engaging practices that improve outcomes for every student. Here is the content of the notification we received from Garner Annett, Education Sales Director, Australia & New Zealand.

Dear Mr Barns,

It is a pleasure to inform you that Orana Catholic Primary School has been renewed as an Apple Distinguished School for 2013-2015, a two year designation. Congratulations on your continued recognition as an exemplary learning environment for innovation, leadership, and educational excellence.

The leadership and staff at Orana Catholic Primary School have shown that they demonstrate the five best practices of an Apple Distinguished School: visionary leadership, innovative learning and teaching, ongoing professional learning, compelling evidence of success, and a flexible learning environment.

Apple has engaged with educators for over 30 years to explore and enhance the experience of teaching and learning. Our education mission is to provide a learning environment that supports the way students live and how they want to learn. We applaud schools such as this one that are able to advance this mission, ensuring that all students are prepared for future success in work and life.

Sincerely yours,

Garner Annett

Swimming Carnival

Tomorrow our students will be attending the intra-school carnival for swimming at the Riverton Leisure Centre. They will travel by bus to the pool at 9.00am with buses returning at the conclusion of the carnival (approximately 2.30pm). Children may leave with their parents at the conclusion of presentations at the pool if written notification has been presented to the class teacher.

Staff Change

This week we farewell Ms Emma Harrison as our Physical Education teacher. Emma joined the staff last year as a temporary replacement for Mr John Rijs (our permanent PE teacher who is currently on leave). Emma is to be married very shortly and will then be moving to the country. I wish to, on behalf of the school community, thank Emma for her generosity and work ethic during her time here at Orana Catholic Primary and to wish her every success for the future. Ms Kate Mavric will join the staff as PE teacher for the remainder of this school year. I would like to welcome Kate to the staff and know that she will receive the support and encouragement of the whole community in her role within the school.

School Mass

Our students from Years 3 - 6 attended Mass to celebrate the Annunciation at the Sts John & Paul church on Tuesday. I congratulate and thank them for their excellent behaviour.

Assembly will be held this Friday commencing at 9am. Honour certificates for students in the middle and upper primary school years will be presented.
