Tuesday 25 February at recess. Everything costs 50 cents. We want to raise money to buy uniforms for poor and orphaned children in Cambodia. Each uniform costs $29.00. Children in Cambodia must have a school uniform to attend school and we want to help them get to school.

Today you will receive entry forms for both the tipping competition and raffle. If you wish to participate please send the reply slips back to the school office by Friday 28 February.

Annual fee accounts will be issued in the coming week. If you have a Health Care Card or Pensioner Confession Card please ensure that a current copy has been provided to the school office to receive a discount on the tuition component of your account. Payment options for 2014 are as follows:

One annual payment - due 21 days after account is issued

Direct Debit - 7 monthly payments

Direct Debit - 14 fortnightly payments

For those families who wish to set up a Direct Debit - forms can be obtained from the school office or downloaded from the school website under the Practical Matters tab from Monday 24 February 2014.

A reminder that when families leave Orana we will no longer process the sale of pre- loved uniforms on their behalf. The credit note system which currently operates will continue for families with children in lower year levels. This will help facilitate a more cost effective management of the Uniform Shop. Many thanks for your understanding in this matter. Donations of unwanted uniforms are still welcome.

Welcome to the new school year. My name is Fiona Ewing and I am the Community Health Nurse who visits your school.

Community Health Nurses serve as a health contact point for children and their families, providing information, assessment, health counselling and referral. The services provided are free and confidential.

Immunisation reminder

Maintaining a high level of immunisation within our community is very important to controlling many communicable diseases.

It is important for parents to make sure that their children have received all of the childhood vaccinations. This includes Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis (whooping cough), and polio vaccines before school entry or from three and a half years of age. If you are unsure, phone 1800 653 809.

If you child has missed out on vaccinations, a doctor or immunisation nurse can provide 'catch-up' vaccinations.

Make an appointment with a GP or visit the local (free) immunisation clinic (medicare card required) provided by:

Child & Adolescent Health ph 6151 1308 OR

Central Immunisation Clinic, Rheola St, West Perth ph 9321 1312

Parents or legal guardians who do not immunise their child should note the following:

In the case of a Measles or Pertussis (whooping cough) outbreak, Western Australian schools are required by the Department of Health, to exclude students who have not received the appropriate vaccination.

Please make sure your school-aged child is fully immunised and that you have provided a copy of the ACIR immunisation record to the school.

Did you know that as parents you can ring the National registry or go to the web site to check out your child's immunisation status? All you need is your Medicare number. Phone 1800 653 809 or access the web site: or email

A copy of an overseas immunisation record can provided to the school office, provided that it has been translated into English.

Tips for preventing head lice

Check your child's hair regularly for head lice and eggs ('nits'). Use a metal fine tooth 'nit' comb and plenty of hair conditioner applied to the dry hair, to make the task easier and more effective. To help children sit still for this, offer distracting activities, e.g. play a favourite video, provide games, encourage reading, offer a head massage

Tie long hair back. Braid long hair and/or put it up if possible.

Consider applying hair gel or mousse. These do not prevent or repel lice but may help to keep stray hair strands from contact with other heads.

Avoid sharing combs or brushes.

Remind your child to avoid head-to-head contact with other children, e.g. when working at the computer with others, or when playing, or hugging.

If your child has head lice please notify their teacher.

From 5 to 6 January, a small group from the parish of Ss John & Paul went on an eleven-day Immersion to the Philippines. They explored Province life and organized Feeding Programs for children and families in two villages. They immersed in Filipino culture by living with local families and getting around using local modes of transport. If you would like to hear the stories of Mandy, Michelle, Sasha and John come along to an evening of personal reflections where there will be a slide show and video clips of their Philippines Justice Immersion. The evening will be held in the Parish Centre on Wednesday 26 February from 7.30-8.30pm followed by a light supper, tea and coffee. Reply John Richards 0417 933 470 or email
