Dear Parents and Carers

We have had a very busy few weeks at school since the start of term. Our swimming carnival is almost upon us and many thanks must go to Mr Rijs for the time and effort he has put into preparing our students with the swim offs and the before school training. Thanks must also go to the parents that have been involved.

Our P&F have organized a Family Fun Night for this Saturday evening. However, there has been a weather forecast that indicates that there may be rain and thunderstorms. A decision will be made on Friday as to whether the evening will go ahead. A letter will be sent home with students if the evening does have to be cancelled. Please contact Kylie Rutherford if you require further information.

Yesterday I attended a meeting facilitated by the Catholic Education Office Director, Tim McDonald. At this meeting he indicated that schools will be involved in helping develop the new Catholic Education Office and System Strategic Plan. I will keep families informed as the process unfolds. There is still no further news on what is happening with the new funding arrangements for Educational Systems from the Federal Government. Catholic schools still face uncertainty with regards to whether we will be worse off or better off. At this stage it is a wait and see game.

A reminder that we are in the process of putting on our school website, a link for families that will enable them to access the Michael Grosse Website that has information regarding parenting of children and students and student issues. Parents will be able to read the information and blog if they wish.

Student Insurance

Just a reminder to families that students attending Orana Catholic Primary School receive insurance coverage through Catholic Church Insurances. CCI will cover most incidents but there are limits to their coverage. I would ask families to read the Insurance Schedule carefully to ensure that they are fully aware of their child/rens insurance cover.

OSHC

The centre will be closed on Good Friday 29 March, Easter Monday 1 April and Easter Tuesday 2 April. The centre will be open from 3 April. Please note that due to staffing arrangements, walk in bookings are no longer available. Families will need to call first to see if there is a place available for their child.

For financial reasons the OSHC Centre will require families with kindergarten children to commit to the days that they have nominated for their child to attend the OSHC Centre. This will mean that if a family has a child in kindergarten and requires after school care for two days then there will be a commitment from the family to pay for two days even if the child only attends for one of the two days booked. If the centre does not follow this policy we would be forced to run at a loss due to staffing ratios. Kindergarten parents will be asked to sign a letter confirming the above.

P&F

There will be a P&F meeting on 11 March at 7:00pm. It will be held in the school staffroom. All are invited to attend.

School Board

There was a school Board meeting on Thursday 28 February. At this meeting the Board approved the lease of another photocopier to replace the old one in the front office. Approval was also given for tree pruning around the school boundaries.

CATHOLIC SCHOOL FUNDING AND THE ELECTIONS

"The Australian Government is undertaking a School Funding Review of schools for school funding post 2012. There is also a Federal Election to be held later this year. The Catholic Bishops of Australia are seeking to obtain from both the Government and the Opposition the provision of ongoing funding for Catholic schools at least at the same level in real terms. Please keep in mind the facts below:

FACTS ON CATHOLIC EDUCATION

"Catholic schools have been providing quality education for Australian children for over 180 years.

There are approximately 1700 Catholic schools in Australia, with an enrolment of almost 700,000 students - that is 1 in 5 of all Australian school students."
