Dear Parents

Staffing 2016

I apologize to the four staff members whose names were omitted from last week's newsletter. They along with two additions (Italian and school-based Social Worker) have been included in the updated staff list that is located here.

Christmas Carols Night

On Tuesday 1 December 2015, commencing at 6.30pm all classes will be performing at our Christmas Concert at the school. Children need to be dressed in a Christmas t-shirt with a free choice of 'bottoms'. Christmas hair adornments are acceptable. All family members and friends are invited to come along for some great entertainment and a chance to join in with some carol singing.

Please note:

  • Parents with blankets can sit in front of the stage on the grassed area, parents on chairs to be seated behind.
  • Students need to be in their classrooms by 6.10pm at the latest. Students will be dismissed from the classrooms immediately following the carols.
  • Parking will be provided on the oval. Please enter the oval from Querrin Avenue (northern side of school), park in rows facing the southern boundary and exit the school out on to Chelmer Avenue (southern boundary).
  • We definitely require some parental assistance to put the stage back into hall following the Carols.
  • Children will have a LED candle for the performance. Additional LED candles for families are available on the night. We do ask for a gold coin donation to cover the cost of the candles. P&F members will be present to sell the candles.

Parent Information Sessions (2016)

In preparation for 2016, please be informed that the Parent Information sessions for PK, K, PP, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3 will be conducted on the morning of Friday 29 January starting at 9.00am and finished by no later than 10.30am. Year 1, 2 and 3 parents should bring the books in on this day as you will have the opportunity to put these into the desks. The start of each school year needs to be a smooth one for your child and with these plans in place, we will try to take away some of the anxiety associated with the first day of the new school year. At least one parent from each family should be present at the class meeting on this morning. Parents with more than one child will have an opportunity to meet briefly with the other year level teacher/s on that day to receive the necessary information they require. Should you need to bring your child they are to remain with you and not be allowed to play unsupervised in the school grounds.

For parents with a child in Years 4, 5 and 6, your class meetings will be conducted on the evening of Monday 8 February 2016.

Waste Free Tuesday

It was a fantastic response by all to the waste-free day yesterday. Mr McArdle commented on having less to clean up when he came in this morning than would normally be there on other days with the bins placed out. We will do the same thing next Tuesday. Your support and encouragement for the efforts of the children is encouraged. Such actions are an important part of the whole education of students here at Orana Catholic Primary School.

In Pope Francis' second encyclical, the subtitle of which is On Care For Our Common Home, the Pope calls all people of the world to take "swift and unified global action" when it comes to our treatment of the environment.

"Education in environmental responsibility can encourage ways of acting which directly and significantly affect the world around us, such as avoiding the use of plastic and paper, reducing water consumption, separating refuse, cooking only what can reasonably be consumed, showing care for other living beings, using public transport or car-pooling, planting trees, turning off unnecessary lights, or any number of other practices." (Laudato si': on care for our common home 211)

Cricket Carnival

Some of our senior students represented the school at an interschool cricket carnival yesterday and were fine ambassadors for the school.

P&F Meeting

This evening we will gather for the final P&F Meeting of 2015, the first one for the new 2016 Committee. I extend a welcome to all interested parents to attend the meeting - 7.00pm in the library.

Class Lists

In addition to the physical list placed on the noticeboard outside OSHC, we will be sending out, as a special newsletter, the 2016 class lists on Wednesday 16 December. If you have already subscribed to the weekly newsletter you will be sent the whole school list via the normal newsletter distribution channels. If you have not subscribed to the newsletter, please become a subscriber via the school website. Where circumstances exist that you do NOT want your child's name placed on the class lists, it is imperative that you inform the Front Office of this before close of business on Monday 14 December. Your child's name will not appear on the class list and you will be informed of the class placement for your child on the Wednesday at the same time as everyone else by personal email. Parents and grandparents of children here generally only view the school subscriber list at Orana Catholic Primary School (based on the information we have as to who subscribes to the newsletter). I would ask that the list not be copied in any form in respect of the privacy of individuals.

Car Park Vigilance

Again, this morning a car was broken into in the school grounds, some time between 8.30am and 10.00am. The same method used where a window was smashed and bags quickly looked through. This latest incident occurred in the car park immediately opposite the green shed area.

This week's assembly is a whole school assembly with honour certificates for students in the junior classes. This week is actually the last Year 6 led assembly for the 2015 school year. The school band will also be performing at the assembly. All most welcome to attend.

School Visit (1)

This Friday, the Executive Director of Catholic Education here in Western Australia, Dr. Tim McDonald will be visiting the school. Dr. McDonald will attend the school assembly before visiting classrooms in his capacity as the leader with Catholic Education.

School Visit (2)

The parish group, "Growing Vine" will be at school on Friday also as they will be attending a small musical concert performed by members of our school band. The mini-concert begins at 10.00am in the hall.

Exit Survey

All families leaving Orana Catholic Primary School at the end of this current school year will be provided with the opportunity to comment on aspects of the school with a survey shortly to be made available for these families. This should be sent to you within the next week.
