Dear Parents

Congratulations to the Year 3 students who received the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time last Thursday evening. The children and their families attended the service with a great deal of reverence and respect for the sense of the occasion. Thank you to the Year 3 teachers and to our Assistant Principal Mr Nik Hofmeester along with Mrs Magdalene Heldt from the Parish for preparing the Students and for organizing the Ceremony. Thank you also to Fr Thai and Fr Christian and the nine visiting priests for their time and commitment.

School Sports Carnival

I would like to thank all those involved in ensuring that yesterday's sports carnival was the success that it was in particular, the work of Mr Leigh Chatt who organized yesterday's carnival and for his many hours of detailed planning and preparation before, during and no doubt, with interschool carnival approaching, after the event itself. Thank you to the staff in general for their work; to the many parents who attended and supported throughout the day; to those parents who volunteered their time in helping on the day and; to the children for their attitude and the way that they conducted themselves throughout the day. The results from the day can be located here.

Strategic Plan Consultation Meeting

Last Monday evening provided the opportunity for parents to have a say in what direction the School should consider taking over the next few years with a public consultative meeting held to discuss the School's Strategic Plan. Six parents only turned up and, not withstanding the quality input from those in attendance, it would have been nice if others saw this as being a priority and ideal opportunity to contribute. At the request of those present, a simple SurveyMonkey questionnaire has since been made and is available for other families to now have the opportunity to contribute to this process. The link can be found here.

Tonight there is an opportunity for parents to be further informed about current research into online safety for children, their habits, the concerns and what parents can do to support children when using the internet, particularly online forums including the popular Minecraft site which does have an online forum and children may be exposed to others through this. We believe that education in this area is very important - the opportunity is there to hear first hand what you can do and what you need to be aware of. I encourage all parents to give due thought to attending (Library 6.30pm-8.00pm).

School Board and P&F

Very important within a Catholic School that we have parents prepared to volunteer their expertise and experience in promoting the well-being of the School. With this in mind, nominations will shortly be invited for a number of positions on the School Board and on the P&F Executive. These forms will be distributed coinciding with next week's Newsletter. Notice is hereby given that the Annual General meetings for both the School Board and the P&F are to be held on the evening of Thursday 12 November commencing at 7.00pm.

2016 Class Placement

Discussions regarding class placements for next year will shortly commence. In consultation with your child's present class teacher, I will be compiling the Class Lists for 2016. There are a number of factors that must be taken into account when balancing class lists including academic ability, gender, interpersonal relationships, and social dynamics. Parental requests are an additional factor and I would like to make clear my policy on this.

Parental requests can only be met in exceptional circumstances. However, if you believe that there exists such circumstance in relation to your child, you are invited to outline this in writing, addressed to me and returned by Monday 9 November. No requests will be considered after this date and please do not ask your child for their preferred teacher, as this does not constitute an exceptional circumstance. When writing your request, please be clear in your reasoning, as unsubstantiated request cannot be considered.

Swimming Lessons Years 1, 2, 3 - 2015

The Years 1,2 and 3 children will be commencing swimming lessons at the Riverton Leisureplex on Monday 26 October. Lessons will continue each day until 6 November.

Please ensure that your child/ren wear their bathers under the school uniform. They must also bring underwear, a towel, goggles/ear plugs (if needed) in a separate bag to the school bag. Asthmatic children (particularly exercise induced asthmatics) should also have their puffers with them each day. We also ask that you make sure your child has their school hat with them.

Children will need to wear their normal school shoes but bring a pair of thongs or sandals to wear to the pool. This is necessary as the ground is very hot and school shoes take too long to take off and put on at the pool.

End of Day Classroom Dismissal

We have made some changes to our end of day procedures to further ensure the safe exit of students from the school grounds, none of which have altered the bell times within the school (despite rumours on Facebook to the contrary). What is happening is a concerted focus and effort by staff directing or accompanying children to the "Greenshed" dismissal area promptly, and when there, having the children seated in specified seating places (based on house or faction groups). Both actions have seen an improvement in the time it has taken for children to exit the school grounds. In recent weeks we have had City of Canning rangers attend the School in response to traffic around this area. We have also noticed, twice in the last week, the positioning of a speed camera vehicle parked outside the school grounds.

Vigilance and Precaution Required

Last school holidays there was a car broken into outside the OSHC in the two minutes the car was left unattended. It is both relatively easy and quick for someone to do just this. Please be aware of such events.

This week's assembly is a whole school assembly with honour certificates for students in the middle and senior grades. All are welcome to attend.
